The Pakistani government started the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) in 1991 as a means of reducing poverty. With support from the World Bank, NRSP founded Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara in 1995.

In March 2011, the NRSP Microfinance Bank opened for business. It is a division of the National Rural Support Programme, an integrated rural development organization that was registered with the corporate law authority of Islamabad in 1984 under the company's ordinance. The city of Bahawalpur is home to the NRSP Microfinance Bank headquarters.
